I figured out a workaround: python extensions = [ "sphinx.ext.extlinks", "sphinx.ext.autodoc", "sphinx_copybutton", ] if not os.environ.get("DISABLE_SPHINX_INLINE_TABS"): extensions += ["sphinx_inline_tabs"] That way I can run sphinx-build -b xml . _build successfully if I set that environment variable.

I get some noisy warnings, but it runs OK. And the resulting docs.db file has rows like this, which I think are fine:
